Hui Chung Ling, Faculty of Arts

Programme: Dali Cultural Experience and Learning Camp

Partner Institution: Yunnan University

Period: March 2 - 9 , 2023

As a student of Chinese History and Political Science, this cultural exchange tour allowed me to recognize the characteristics and cultures of Yunnan, such as the tie-dyeing of Lanxian, the Karma culture, and the ceramic cats. I was also able to learn about the history of the Bai ethnic group and the unique characteristics that set them apart from other ethnic groups. In addition, I gained a deeper understanding of the cultural integration of Yunnan, a multi-ethnic province, and the efforts it has made in cultural preservation and inheritance.

It was an honor to visit the ancient cities of Dali, Weishan (the capital of Nanjian Kingdom), and Xizhou, as well as the renowned scenic spot, Erhai Sea. I was able to experience the natural and untamed scenery of Yunnan, which allowed me to slow down and appreciate the rhythm of life there. The slower pace of life in Yunnan, compared to the fast-paced environment of Hong Kong, let me see what life could truly be like.

The meaning of traveling is not only to see the scenery but also to bond with the people who see it with you. I am very thankful that I was able to meet my classmates from Yunnan University. Living, eating, and exchanging ideas with them allowed me to understand the differences between the two places. This expanded my worldview and knowledge of Mainland China, which was a precious opportunity.

With the increase in exchanges between the two places, we, as students, should also strive to know and understand our motherland. Thanks to the opportunity provided by China Vision, this trip was very beneficial.
